I’m so excited to be (finally) launching my blog, Organizing Odyssey. It will give me a chance to offer tips, advice and insight related to getting your life (and business) organized. The decision to revamp my website was not just about aesthetics, I wanted my site to be a tool for me to connect with the public directly. Also, because I work with so many wonderful individuals who are trying to achieve their dreams, be their own boss and create real change in their lives, I needed to practice what I preach I knew that it would be important to do more than simply hire a contractor to put all the pieces together – I wanted to know how to build my own web site, create my own blog and maintain it myself. It has been a huge learning curve for me but fun and so rewarding! Thus I can say, with real geeky confidence and lingo, that I have not only created a great new website, but I have also undertaken developing my own social media campaign and web presence! I’ve always been hands-on with my work, why wouldn’t I have a direct role in the development of my online space?

I’m really excited because I’ve taken the time to learn what goes into building a blog and editing a website. My new blog (and website!) has been built using a custom WordPress theme – something very new for me. I’m proud of my decision to build the site using an Open-Source platform (How rad is it that I can quote phrases like Open-Source? I’m a geek already!).

As a small business owner, it is important to take control of your assets, which includes your online presence. It is so valuable to be able to answer questions like; What is your Google Pagerank? What results turn up in a Google Search for your name? Is your website easily indexed by search engines (by having text as HTML instead of text as an image?) Yes, I know that these may be scary questions, but with a little research and discussions with friends, I’ve learned that it’s not only easy, but actually kind of fun.

I think the message here is that learning a new skill, embarking on a change, and trying something new (like website development) isn’t reserved for the “Gen Y’ers” or the young technology experts; someone at my age can pick up these skills and be good at it. I’m proud to say that I’m familiar with HTML and FTP configurations, and I’m learning how to blog. I’d love for you to join me on this technological journey. And, of course, your input is valued, please leave me a comment and let me know what you think – or send in your experiences and advice for building a website and/or blog. I look forward to the conversations.

All the best,

Isolde
